Academic Staff: 115 Members (90 of which are PhDs). Number of Students:
over 1000.
The Faculty was established according to the Order of the of University
Rector, Dr. A.N. Sevchenko. It was originally based on three departments: Computational
Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Differential Equations. Professor E.A. Ivanov was the
Dean of the Faculty from the date of its foundation to 1981.
Famous mathematicians of the Faculty include Dr. N.P. Erugin and Dr.
V.I. Krylov. They have played a great role in the Faculty?s organisation and
development.
Similar faculties were also created in other leading universities of
the former Soviet Union (Moscow, Leningrad, Novosibirsk, Kiev and others) due to the
national economic demands of the 1960?s and 1970?s for new specialists, (applied
mathematicians in particular). Since 1993, the faculty was known as the Faculty of Applied
Mathematics. The renaming of the school was connected with the introduction of new
specialities and fields. The Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science works in
close co-operation with the Faculty of Business and Information Technology.

Student Life
Students spend a significant amount of time in the classroom, and at by
the same token; they find time for scientific research, participate in solving urgent
applied problems and develop applicable software. Three scientific laboratories for
students are located within the Faculty. Student scientific conferences are held annually.
The students of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science have won various
international contests in computer science many times over.
Students can display their creative abilities not only in their general
studies and scientific research, but also in various university and department amateur
artistic groups (dance, theatre, etc.). Many generations of graduates are brought up in
the spirit of good old traditions. Alumni of the Faculty recall the Mini Theatre, the
Feniks cheergroup, club meetings, and the faculty newspaper Algorithm.
The University?s sporting complex, includes a stadium, pool, sauna,
gymnasiums, and various sporting sections to satisfy not only amateurs, but also skilled
athletes as well.
Those who prefer the smoke of a blazing campfire to the comforts of
home, gather at traditional camping sites in May where cheerful faculty songs ring out
over the tents. |
